If The Mac Quarterback suddendly quits, freezes or bombs with a Type 1 error, chances are you can correct the problem by checking for a conflict with an extension, control panel device, or desk accessory.
All applications use functions within the system's Toolbox, although certainly not all of them. These are accessed (called) by the application from a directory of addresses. Sometimes extensions, CDEVs, etc. change one of those addresses to direct the caller to their own routines. If the application does something that the extension programmer has not foreseen, then the system will bomb. Or, if the extension runs only briefly and the programmer forgets to restore the original address, any application that calls that address will bomb because the address leads nowhere.
Of course, not all applications will bomb with a faulty extension running. The reason is that the application does not use the function altered by the extension.
Now Utilities: Super Boomerang
SuperBoomerang alters a program's Open menu item to include a hierarchal menu of the last opened files and folders.
I'm currently using System 7.1 on a IIcx. Even though I've written a resource for The Mac Quarterback to interface with Super Boomerang, Super Boomerang still causes my system to freeze on occasion (always the wrong occasion). It also causes freezes with several other applications, including ResEdit, TeachText, and the America OnLine program.
You do not need to disable Super Boomerang to correct the problem. From the Super Boomerang control panel, click the Exclude button and move The Mac Quarterback to the Exclude box.
Other Extension, CDEV problems
To locate the extension or CDEV that is causing the problem, disable a group and check to see if the bomb has disappeared. If it does, then one of those in the group is the source of the problem. Then it becomes a process of elimination to find which one. If it still occurs, move on to another group and disable them until you've found the one causing the problem.
This can be a tedious process but chances are great that some other application you run will also suddenly quit at the least opportune moment. And, you're better off not using an extension that causes problems.
